Ngā Manukura o Āpōpō Clinical Leadership Programme

The Physiotherapy Board ǀ Te Poari Tiaki Tinana o Aotearoa provides scholarships for emerging Māori physiotherapist practising in Aotearoa. This has been provided through Ngā Manukura o Āpōpō Clinical Leadership Programme which is for Māori Nurses and Midwives.

The Board | Te Poari have secured positions over a number of years for Māori Physiotherapists with the aim to grow physiotherapy clinical leadership skills for physiotherapists of Māori whakapapa to foster confidence in Te Ao Māori for those currently working in the health sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Programme to date has been a great success, therefore the Board ǀ te Poari is continuing to support emerging Māori physiotherapist clinical leaders through this programme by providing a further scholarship in 2025. The Board ǀ Te Poari is offering two positions on cohort 35 commencing in February 2025 and invites you to now apply.

Ngā Manukura o Āpōpō offers a marae-based kaupapa Māori leadership development programme to aspiring and established Māori clinical leaders. The Programme is designed to stimulate learning, discussion, debate and action. The 8-day Clinical Leadership Training Programme consists of four 2-day wānanga spread over a 4-month period. ​ Ngā Manukura Clinical Leadership Programme has a strong reputation for contributing to building the clinical leadership capacity and capability.

Purpose
The programme aims to:

  • increase participants’ understanding of a broad number of ‘cutting edge’ leadership issues
  • provide a safe, but challenging, environment for participants to explore issues related to leadership in Māori physiotherapy; and
  • build and strengthen participants’ networks across the country by fostering support and strategy sharing.

Key themes to be explored in the programme include:

  • leading a change management project to completion
  • tools and strategies for Māori leaders
  • leading to make a difference
  • living by design; and
  • current issues for Māori leaders.

Participant Eligibility​

For you to be eligible to be considered for the programme, you must be:

  • Māori (whakapapa)
  • have a current Annual Practicing Certificate
  • have the support of your employer (if applicable)
  • committed to beneficial health outcomes for Māori
  • be open to learning
  • committed to attending all four wānanga
  • committed to completing a group project outside of the wānanga; and
  • committed to completing the programme.

Ngā Manukura (Cohort 35) will be held at Wai Ora Training Trust, 48 Watsons Road, Harewood, in Christchurch. 

  • Thursday 13 & Friday 14 February 2025
  • Thursday 13 & Friday 14 March 2025
  • Thursday 10 & Friday 11 April 2025
  • Thursday 8 & Friday 9 May 2025

Start times are 9am on Day One of each wānanga and work till late in the evening. Start again at 7.45am and finish no later than 3pm on Day Two of the wānanga.

Please note: You must be able to attend all of the four wānanga for cohort 35.

The Board |Te Poari scholarship covers:

  • accommodation at the marae on the Thursday night
  • meals during the wānanga
  • training resources; and
  • Board preapproved travel to attend the wānanga.

You or your organisation need to cover:

  • your release time from employment
  • small kohā
  • bedding for the marae (Thursday night).
